The Yeti Tumbler receives a lot of praise, but is it all justified?

There seem to be only two types of coffee drinkers in America: those who adore their Yeti Tumbler and those who are sick of hearing how much others adore their Yeti Ramblers. Even the most casual users of this travel mug seem to become overnight brand evangelists for it for some reason.

The Yeti Tumbler's Performance in Tests

Performance in Temperature
The Rambler’s vacuum insulation, which is said to be there “to protect your hot or cold beverages at all costs,” is possibly Yeti’s most audacious claim. The Rambler kept liquids hot for 412 hours when CR’s test engineer Bernie Deitrick filled it with water heated to the same temperature as freshly brewed coffee.

Even though it received a Very Good rating in our test and may be sufficient for most users, Deitrick notes that it was far from ideal. “We discovered eight mugs that outperformed the Rambler, including a Zojirushi that maintained water’s heat for 1312 hours, or roughly three times as long as the Yeti.” The Rambler’s 412 hours may be excessive for most coffee drinkers, and nearly 14 hours may be as well. However, it is also obvious that the Rambler is not at the top of the field.

Spilling and Letting Go

To be fair, the Rambler isn’t a leakproof mug because that’s not how it was intended to work. The Rambler’s lid has a rubber gasket around its perimeter, and it fits snugly atop a lip inside the mug. This tight fit prevents coffee from splashing, for example, when you drive over a speed bump. It also slows leaks if the mug is knocked onto its side, giving you time to turn it right side up before your coffee spills all over the floor. You can easily take a sip using its straightforward magnetic opening mechanism before closing the latch.

Although Yeti makes it clear that the Rambler is not leakproof, we believe it is more accurately referred to as leak-resistant. The Rambler’s design likely strikes the ideal balance between simple drinking and rudimentary defense against the worst leaks for many users. In our tests, we discovered that features like additional latches, which make mugs leakproof, also tend to make them a little more difficult to use. After all, it’s annoying to have to press a button or pop a cap up each time you take a sip of coffee.

Daily usage and cleaning

Finding a mug that is both thin enough to fit in a standard car cup holder and still simple to wash by hand is difficult. But that’s where the Rambler comes in.

That is due to the fact that it is thin where it should be. The Rambler’s tapered shape, which is narrower at the bottom and wider at the top, allowed it to fit without difficulty into the cup holders of four different vehicles in our test, ranging from a Toyota Prius to a Honda Pilot. It was also one of only two mugs that could be easily cleaned by hand without the use of a bottle brush.

Almost no crevices in the Rambler’s design also limit the areas where coffee can accumulate; the mug didn’t retain any unpleasant odors even after we let coffee and cream sit in it for 48 hours before washing.

The mug’s top has a rolled lip, making it easy to drink even without the lid. You can purchase a replacement lid from Yeti for $10 if you ever break or misplace it. Additionally, you can purchase the magnetic latch on the lid separately for $3 if you misplace or break it. Some manufacturers don’t offer replacement lids or any replacement parts at all, so if something breaks, you’d have to buy a brand-new mug.

The conclusion

You must recognize the shortcomings of competing mugs in order to appreciate what makes the Yeti Rambler unique. Too many mugs have the impression that engineers, rather than casual coffee drinkers, were the target audience. They frequently have designs that are excruciating to use or clean because they are made to be attractive or to keep coffee hot at all costs.

The Rambler gives you the impression that it was made especially for you in many ways. Every mug sacrifices some performance in order to increase convenience, or the other way around. The Yeti Rambler appears to get those trade-offs just right.

Although it doesn’t keep coffee as hot as most other mugs, it does so for 412 hours, which is sufficient for the majority of commutes. Although it isn’t leak- or spill-proof, its weight and ability to rest firmly on a surface, along with its spill-resistant lid, all help to lessen the possibility of a serious spill. In addition to being exceptionally simple to clean, that lid makes drinking from it a breeze. The 20-ounce Rambler can be cleaned by hand with a sponge and is slim enough to fit in every cupholder we’ve tried.

Given everything, it’s understandable why the Yeti Rambler has such a following. Although it wouldn’t be the best choice to carry to the summit of Mount Everest, it might be ideal for your commute.
